Blog Post #3: Research Gap

Closing the Gaps

During the research stage of my literature review, I didn't really have a solid idea about what gaps there might be that I could fill with primary research (or at least make suggestions for). Some sources were extremely specific to accessibility and/or universal design in technical writing courses only, while others were very general and discussed the broader implications of higher education institutions making accommodations for their students. Once I took the time to write the whole literature review, however, a couple of things stood out. One thing I noticed is that basic composition courses were not studied as often. More often than not, accessibility and universal design principles were not directly applied to English 1010 or English 2010 (or the course equivalents for other universities). Most of the research was also highly focused on online and hybrid course setups and was rather sparse in terms of suggesting how to make in-person courses more accessible.

Knowing what hasn't been saturated in this topic will make it easier to design my usability study for the proposal, and I can definitely work with what I know now.

  1. I saw a similar thing. I read a study that was about implementing usability into the training of online technical communication educators, but not enough about that same implementation for courses in general. I think your proposal will be great!

  2. Hi Emi,

I love your blog #3!! After having read your lit. review writing assignment, I really like your idea of designing a proposal on accessibility and UD principles as applied to first-year writing courses (F2F). Your reflection seems to springboard a rhetorical exigency for this type of inquiry and am sure, once your research design/proposal has been set from a specific research method's standpoint (and if conducted after 6401), it would be a welcome addition to TWDR scholarship. I believe you've established a good opening/edge here to pursue your topic all the more. Am looking forward to chatting with you more about your plans.
